Dr. emeag., I am an african american journalist married to an igbo pharmacist...25yrs two kids(met in college). Just returned back from NIgeria and things even though a supposed democracy...more like a demo-crazy-NEPA is still doing what it did when afrobeat artist Tony Allen put out the song Never Expect Power Always, and you still have to give bribes in certain situations...the expected courtesy...but I still love the flavor of Nigeria, having had southern grandparents. What I want to talk about is the joblessness, which is 10x what it is here in the U>S-meaning that if I did want to go back there and live in Owerri with my husbands' people...I would be rich in culture but poor in pockets...I feel thats why so many of the brightest of the brightest have opted to stay here where they can at least get a job as a taxi-driver even if they are a physics major...half bread --is better than none!!!Investigate and see how many college educated 419ers were out there...some argue that Ed McManns' Publishers' Clearing House Sweepstakes is a the same thing (bait and switch) and I agree...instead of using the educated, however, an old respected gray haired father was used...the point is what hope is there if there is no hope? The best thing --would be to try to get a green card by marrying some american girl that at least half ways likes you, and hanging out here hoping for the best!!!
Nigeria is a beautiful country and I love it...but like many families for us it has become a vacation spot in which we can never hope to build a compound in to settle there finally....even though crime has some what calmed down with the Bekasi boys (vigilantes) since the police men use their sporty 4x4's,flashy motorcycles, and uniforms as prestiage symbols we can only look forward to the next time when we can spare 1,500 a piece for the next KLM jet ticket since Nigeria Airways is non functional....and keep in touch with the family by aerogrammes......
